COLUMBIA, MO. -- Columbia snow plow drivers continue to work around the clock.
Most of Columbia’s priority roads are clean and passable, but many residential streets still remain untouched.
City officials hope to have every street plowed and passable by Saturday, weather permitting.
The owners of Four Winds Villages Subdivision say this is the first time they’ve seen a Columbia snow plow truck clear their streets since they first offered apartments back in 2006. This apartment complex has a lot of college students. Snow covered streets have made it hard for them to get to classes.
Four Winds Villages Manager Josie Duggin said, “We’ve had tenants that have been stuck in their houses for the past 2 or 3 days. We don’t have the utilities or the manpower to physically shovel every one of our tenants out of the snow. That would be nice, especially since Mizzou never closes. All of our students have been landlocked.”
Columbia plow truck drivers are responsible for more than 500 miles of streets. They use a priority system where they treat major roads first followed by neighborhood streets. Steven Johns is patiently waiting for snow removal in his Westside neighborhood.
Johns said, “I can get around myself, O.K., but I’m sure there are quite a few other folks that would appreciate a little more being done.”
Columbia Public Works officials said the city’s 18 plow trucks will remain on the job around the clock until every city street is safe and passable.
Authorities suggested you slow down and allow for extra time when traveling in snowy and icy conditions.
