COLUMBIA, MO. -- At Columbia’s Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Gardens off of the MKT Trail, dozens of people of all ages and races took a few minutes to think about King’s legacy.
After a brief ceremony, a motorcade of about 40 cars drove from the gardens to Columbia’s Second Baptist Church for another memorial service.
This year’s guest speaker was NAACP National Director of Capacity Building Reverend Gill Ford.
The group sang black spiritual songs and prayed for a world without racism and prejudice.
NAACP President Mary Ratliff said, “It is our job in the NAACP to stay vigilant and to make sure that we try to help make this country live up to its creed that all people are created equal and are entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That’s what we are about.”
Martin Luther King Jr. would be 82 years old.
Throughout Mid-Missouri, people celebrated King’s birthday with private ceremonies.
Some say this year is even more special since we have our first African-American president in office.
