JEFFERSON CITY, MO -- Update: Friday, Jan. 14 at 1:35 p.m.:
A malfunctioning light ballast caused an automatic alarm to sound at the Missouri Capitol Friday afternoon.
The alarm went off just before 1 p.m.
Jefferson City Fire Department spokesman Jason Turner told KRCG there were no evacuations and the issue was detected and brought under control fairly quickly.
The incident happened near an elevator on the 4th floor.
The malfunctioning light ballast was inside a florescent light near the elevator. The ballast controls the light and they are “notorious for going bad”, Turner said.
He also said a foul odor often follows a light ballast issue, but didn’t know whether that was the case at the Capitol.
