COLUMBIA, MO --
Update, Wednesday Jan. 12th 4:57 p.m.:
Investigators say the burnt Nissan Altima was a total loss of $5,000.
The cause of the fire is officially undetermined because extreme heat from the fire destroyed any evidence of a source.
Original Story, Wednesday 1:30 p.m.:
A car fire destroys a Columbia woman's car.
The fire broke out shortly after 12:00 p.m. Wednesday in a driveway in the 3700 Hundred Block of Sugar Tree Lane in the northeast section of town.
Tammy Jeans, the owner of the car, said she had come home for lunch and had only been inside 5 minutes when her son told her the car was on fire.
Jeans said she ran outside and called 911. Fire crews arrived quickly and put out the fire, but not before the Nissan Altima suffered serious damage.
A man living in the building next door said he heard a hissing sound followed by an explosion.
Fire investigators say the car is a total loss and are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.
Jeans is a single mother who had recently moved to Columbia from Monroe City after getting a new job. She said she only had liability insurance on the car and doesn't know how she is going to be able to get a new car.
