KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Ike Skelton's election defeat after 34 years in Congress has been named the top Missouri story of 2010 in a survey of newspaper and broadcast editors.
The Associated Press surveyed newsrooms across the state. A majority of those responding ranked Skelton's mid-term loss to Republican Vicky Hartzler in Missouri's 4th District as the year's biggest story.
Skelton had kept a tight grip on a district that otherwise tilts toward Republicans by emphasizing his military expertise and social conservative views. But Hartzler said Skelton was out of touch with his constituents and her campaign was a "fight to take back our country."
Other stories ranked among the top 10 included Missouri's budget mess, Republican Roy Blunt's Senate win and the public vote to oppose the federal health care mandate.
