COLUMBIA, MO. (AP) -- The number of University of Missouri students referred for suspected alcohol violations doubled from 2008 to 2009.
But officials say the numbers are known to fluctuate, and part of the increase could stem from better reporting on campus.
The latest report shows the number of students referred on suspicion of violating alcohol policies went from 430 in 2008, to 883 in 2009. In 2007, 631 students were referred.
Kristen Temple, associate director of Residential Life, said not all of the referred students were found guilty of alcohol violations.
Campus police also say that in 2009, 102 students were arrested for alcohol infringements. That's down from 120 in 2008.
Temple also told The Columbia Daily Tribune that the statistics show that staff members aren't ignoring situations of concern.
