JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Crews are cleaning up chips of lead-based paint that have drifted from the ceiling of the Missouri House chamber onto desks and furniture below.
A spokesperson for the state Office of Administration said Wednesday that workers will remove flakes from the ceiling and repaint the area. Work started this week and is expected $50,000 at most.
The project had been scheduled for next spring but was moved up because the chipping paint needed to be fixed immediately. Now, it is to be completed this month. Missouri lawmakers begin their annual session Jan. 5.
Exposure to lead can cause various health problems. In young children and fetuses, it can lead to delays in physical and mental development.
On Wednesday, drop clothes covered several of the desks used by House members.
