JEFFERSON CITY, MO -- A couple Jefferson City organizations are now accepting donations for those who lost belongings and their homes in an apartment fire Monday afternoon.

The Samaritan Center is collecting clothing and non-perishable food items at its location on 1310 East McCarty Street. The center is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m.

The American Red Cross is accepting money donations to help those devastated by the fire. The Red Cross in Jefferson City is located at 431 East McCarty Street.

Fire officials say a cigarette started the fire at a building in the Cedar Brook Apartment complex. There were 12 units in the building.  Twenty-four people lived there.
