State Auditor Susan Montee
JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- In what was likely her last news conference as state auditor, Susan Montee came down hard on the Missouri Technology Corporation.
The state-funded group set up to build research bridges between industry and universities and to market the technology breakthroughs that result.
Montee said the agency has a history of conflicts of interest, misuse of money, and general ineffectiveness at attracting business investments to Missouri.
The lame-duck democrat also claims the agency was uncooperative and hostile toward her auditing staff.
"We had to limit the scope because we were not given access to various documents,” Montee said. “It was a fight to get information at every turn.”
Montee said that attitude is not uncommon with audits involving semi-private agencies.
In its written response, MTC noted it now has adopted a conflict of interest policy.
It said the agency already has many outstanding accomplishments, but it's too early to track the long-term success.
