JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- We've all heard of Black Friday but how familiar are you with Small Business Saturday?

The event, which is sandwiched between black Friday and cyber Monday encourages shoppers to spend their money locally.

Small businesses along high street in Jefferson City think the idea is great for not only their business but also the city.

"If we remember in times like this, or just anytime to shop at home,” Southbank Gift Company’s owner Jill Bednar said.  “All of the money stays here and it affects taxes and that's wonderful.  As opposed to shopping online where nothing comes back to Jefferson City, so I think it's important."

Studies find that for every $100 spent in independently owned stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures.
