JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel is offering up some advice for recipients of gift cards and certificates.

Zweifel says in a news release to keep the physical card or certificate even it is has expired. That's because businesses are required to turn over any remaining value to the treasurer's office after five years. Searches can be conducted online.

Zweifel says that nearly $60,000 in gift card and certificate credit has been returned to Missourians from unclaimed property since January 2010. More than $5.2 million is waiting for account owners.
