ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) -- The St. Joseph Police Department says an officer who was killed last week had asked a fellow officer to shoot him with a training round so he could see how it felt.
But officer Jason Strong didn't realize he was using a real gun when he shot Dan De Kraai Sept. 15 during a break in a training session.
The St. Joseph News-Press reports that the training session didn't include live ammunition, but the two officers had gone to a convenience store during a break and took their regular weapons with them.
De Kraai was killed outside an unoccupied school where the officers were training.
St. Joseph police plan to forward a report on the shooting to Buchanan County prosecutors within a week. Strong remains on administrative leave.
