JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Federal officials are urging swimmers and boaters to be careful on Missouri lakes over the Labor Day weekend.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says there have been 10 water-related deaths on six of its 18 lakes in Iowa and Missouri.

The Corps urges people to wear life jackets and to be careful about drinking alcohol while on the water. Officials say 90 percent of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket. About half of fatal accidents involve alcohol.

Corps officials also urges parents to keep a close watch on their children and to check the weather forecast before going out on the water.
