KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A Kansas City Jesuit priest is nearing the end of his 5,000-mile bike ride aimed at raising awareness about poverty.
The Rev. Matt Ruhl and his Cycling for Change companions plan a stop Tuesday in Miami before the journey ends Saturday in Key West, Fla.
Cities along the route have been encouraged to highlight poverty issues and raise money to benefit programs that serve the poor.
Catholic Charities said in a news release that more than 400 people have ridden with Ruhl and his companions along the way.
Ruhl is the outgoing pastor of St. Francis Xavier church in Kansas City. He said he is inspired by a Catholic Charities USA campaign of reducing poverty by 50 percent by the year 2020.
