JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri is receiving a $2.1 million federal grant to improve and expand charter schools in Kansas City and St. Louis.
The state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education said Tuesday that Missouri is one of 11 states and the District of Columbia to share in the $136.1 million allocation. The grant will be distributed over three years.
Goals of the grant include supporting high-performing charter schools and improving student performance.
Charter schools are publicly funded and exempt from many rules and regulations, which advocates said encourages educational innovation.
Missouri education officials said more than 18,000 students are enrolled in the state's charter schools.
