COLUMBIA, MO. -- Three law enforcement agencies are conducting sobriety checkpoints this weekend.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Department, the Columbia Police Department and the University of Missouri Police Department plan to do separate checkpoints sometime between now and 3 a.m.on Sunday.
Authorities are not giving the locations of the checkpoints.
The crackdown on drunk drivers coincides with the start of new school year.
“We know we have a huge influx of people coming in town between last weekend and this weekend," Columbia Police Officer Jill Wieneke said. "This is also a big weekend for folks to go out because they are back to school. We’re trying to hopefully, deter some of the drinking and driving that goes on.”
Funding for this weekend’s sobriety checkpoints comes from a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Division.
Its part of the “You Drink and Drive, You Lose” campaign.
