JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri Treasurer Clint Zweifel wants to dedicate part of Missouri's low-income housing aid to the mentally ill at risk of being homeless.
Zweifel proposed Wednesday that one-third of the housing units funded by the Missouri Housing Development Commission be set aside for that purpose. He estimates that amounts to 400 specialized homes funded by $127 million of state and federal tax credits distributed over a 10-year period.
Zweifel wants the housing commission to consider his plan at its meeting Friday.
He said on any given night, more than 6,000 people are homeless in Missouri, with about 1,100 being chronically homeless and often suffering from a mental illness.
