COLUMBIA, MO. -- Gov. Jay Nixon and First Lady Georganne Nixon visited Columbia’s Rock Bridge State Park Friday morning to highlight the State Parks Youth Corps program.
The Youth Corps has employed nearly 1,000 young people in paid positions at parks and historic sites across Missouri since May.
“When I announced the State Park Youth Corps during my State of the State Address, I envisioned an initiative that would get young people off the couch and away from the TV, a program that would get folks outdoors,” Nixon said.
Young Missourians between the ages of 17 and 24 are working on a variety of assignments and projects.
Southern Boone County High School senior Shade Sanders is working on a new 4-mile bike trail at Rock Bridge State Park.
“I took this job because I wanted a good summer job," Sanders said. "I wanted to learn some new stuff. I wanted to learn how to do some new work. I figured that this job would be fun. It is pretty fun. I like the work that we do. I like working outdoors. I like hard work. I like working with my hands. That’s mostly why I took this job.”
Youth Corps workers get their pay through The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and The Workforce Investment Act.
The program continues through Sept. 30.
