JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Jefferson City officials are working to repair a cemetery where a human jawbone was found lying on the ground, headstones are damaged and older graves are overgrown.
Mark Schreiber, a city historian, said the Old City Cemetery also has a serious groundhog problem.
Charlie Lansford, assistant director of community development, said he wasn't aware of the problems until contacted by the Jefferson City News Tribune. But he said the city will work with a lawn care company on the overgrowth problem, and might hire an expert to deal with the groundhogs.
Lee Lyman, chairman of the University of Missouri's anthropology department, confirmed that a bone found lying on the ground was from a human.
