HOLLYWOOD (AP) -- Family members say actress Patricia Neal has died at her Massachusetts home at the age of 84.

She'd had lung cancer -- which her family says she fought with "grace" and "stubbornness."

Less than two years after she won an Oscar for her role in "Hud," Neal suffered a series of strokes in 1965 at the age of 39.

Her struggle to walk and talk again is regarded as epic in the annals of stroke rehabilitation. A facility in her native Knoxville, Tenn., that helps people recover from strokes and from spinal cord and brain injuries is named for her.

After her recovery, she earned another Oscar nomination and three Emmy nominations.

Neal's films included "The Fountainhead," "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and "A Face in the Crowd."

Her first Emmy nomination came in the made-for-TV movie that served as a pilot for "The Waltons."
