COLUMBIA, MO. -- About 50,000 bikers continue to arrive in Columbia this week for the 33rd Annual National Bikers Round Up at the Boone County Fairgrounds.
The majority of the bikers are expected to roll in Thursday night as the event begins a series of live concerts and entertainment.
A local motorcycle club used this week’s event to raise some money for a good cause.
Members of the Wheels of Choice Motorcycle Club held a charity fish fry during this year’s National Bikers Round Up. People in this club come from Jefferson City, Columbia and Quincy, Illinois. The group sold fresh catfish and all the fixings to their fellow bikers during a fundraiser at the Hogs and Dawgs Bar near Columbia’s Lake of the Woods exit. Money from the event pays for school supplies for needy Mid-Missouri children.
“The Wheels of Choice Motorcycle Club believes in education," Wheels of Choice President Rich Griffin said. "We think it starts with our elementary school kids. Every year, we buy school supplies and give them to needy children.”
Cooks at the charity fish fry said their meal was genuine soul food.
“I recommend hot sauce, a little bit of mustard and a tad bit of ketchup, and you are fine,” Wheels of Choice member Lamont Dobbins said.
This fish fry gave bikers from all across the country a chance to taste some fresh fish from Missouri. It also gave them a chance to meet new friends. Word of the fish fry quickly spread throughout the National Bikers Round Up campgrounds which was just a few miles away from the charity event.
“We’re meeting people from all over the country, especially at the campgrounds at the fairgrounds," Wheels of Choice Member Melvin Thompson said. "There are people directly beside you. You get to spend a lot of time visiting with those guys. When they have this venue in their hometown, they get to take care of you the way we are trying to take care of them.”
Members of the wheels of choice motorcycle club sold more than 600 meals at $10 a piece, raising more than $6,000 for school supplies.
The National Bikers Round Up at the Boone County Fairgrounds continues through Sunday.
