COLUMBIA, MO -- Police are stepping up security for tonight’s Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube concert.
The rapping icons will perform at The Blue Note’s 30th Anniversary Block Party on Ninth Street in Downtown Columbia.
The two hip-hop heavyweights are representing west coast rappers at the concert. Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube are teaming up for their “How the West was One Tour”. Blue Note Owner Richard King said this show is the perfect way to celebrate his 30 years in the music business. King said it was a lot of fun when Snoop played his venue 5 years ago.
“It’s probably going to be the most diverse crowd," King said. "I mean we are going to be covering everything. There are going to be grandmas here. There are going to be kids here. There are going to be doctors here. There are going to be lawyers here. There are going to be moms and dads here. It’s a pretty wide swath that we have going here.”
More than 2,500 people bought tickets for the sold out show. The outdoor stage and audience area are between the blocked off intersections of Broadway and Walnut on Ninth Street.
Police are counting on members of the crowd to police themselves. They’re encouraging concert goers to tell police or event staff if they see any disruptive behavior.
The six member Columbia Police Downtown Unit will be on patrol at the concert as well as six additional officers. The Blue Note’s event staff will also keep a close eye on the crowd.'
“If you think that there is something brewing or something going on, just pull aside an officer," Columbia Police Officer Jill Wieneke said. "The Blue Note has a great security staff that wears marked shirts. Pull one of them aside and say hey, I think you might watch these folks over here. That kind of gives us a heads up before things start.”
Wieneke said The Blue Note has held several outdoor concerts this summer with only minor problems. She expects the same thing for Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube’s 30th Anniversary Show.
The Blue Note officially turns 30 years old this Sunday.
