JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Ten people have turned in petition signatures to appear as independent candidates on Missouri's general election ballot.

The hopefuls include U.S. Senate candidate Doug Enyart, a forestry consultant from Piedmont who says he is running to stop out-of-control spending in Washington.

There already are nine Republican, three Democrat, three Constitution Party and two Libertarian candidates running in Missouri's Aug. 3 Senate primaries. Incumbent Kit Bond, a Republican, is not seeking another term.

The secretary of state's office has until Aug. 24 to determine whether the independent candidates gathered enough signatures to appear on the November ballot.

Besides the U.S. Senate race, independent candidates also have turned in signatures for several congressional and state legislative races.
