MAMMOTH, Mo. (AP) -- Rescues of motorists during flash floods typically involve law enforcement officers helping civilians to safety.
But it was a deputy sheriff who got swept two miles down a rain-swollen creek in southern Missouri over the weekend.
Ozark County Sheriff Raymond Pace says Deputy Nick Jones was returning from an accident scene about 12:30 a.m. Sunday when his patrol car was swept off a low-water bridge.
KYTV reports that Jones was able to call for help before the car plunged into Possum Walk Creek.
The car came to rest about a half-mile downstream. Rescuers found Jones three hours later on an island, about two miles from the bridge.
The sheriff said Jones was recovering in good condition Monday.
