JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- Sewer rates are on the rise for Jefferson City residents.

Base rates have gone up by $1.59 to $7.48 and user rates have increased 43 cents per 100 cubic feet of water.

The average household will see an increase of $46 per year.

The rate increase stems from an unfunded federal mandate to require the city to disinfect effluent before it leaves the city's plants.

The total cost of the disinfection project is $8.7 million.

City officials said this disinfection will make the Missouri River water safer as well.
