JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Customers of Missouri-American Water Co. will be paying about $28 million more annually.

The Missouri Public Service Commission said Thursday that it had approved a rate increase for the water and sewer company.

Missouri-American provides water to about 584,000 customers around the state. But the new rates will vary by location.

For example, rates will rise by nearly 15 percent for customers in St. Louis and St. Charles and by nearly 16 percent for customers in Joplin.

St. Joseph customers will pay about 3 percent more while Jefferson City customers actually will see a slight decrease in rates.
