Supporters of former Columbia mayor Darwin Hindman hope to honor the recently retired city leader and his wife with a public garden at a park he helped revive.

The Darwin and Axie Hindman Discovery Garden would be located at Stephens Lake Park, a public gathering spot previously owned by Stephens College. As mayor, Hindman led the effort to persuade voters to approve city purchase of the land a decade ago.

Preliminary plans call for three themed gardens and a Native American-style council ring surrounded by seven Burr oak trees. Project backers hope to raise $60,000 in private contributions to create the garden. The city parks department would be responsible for maintenance.

Hindman was elected in 1995 and left office in April as Columbia's longest-serving mayor.
