JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri's capital city is considering whether to silence tornado sirens in favor of telephone-based warnings.
The Jefferson City News Tribune reports that city officials are exploring a reverse 911 system that would send emergency messages to land-line and cell phones.
Police Chief Roger Schroeder says the phone messages could be a more efficient warning system than maintaining outdoor sirens. The cost remains unclear, though.
Representatives from a Florida company are to make a presentation to Jefferson City officials in July about a potential phone-based emergency system.
