JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- Jefferson City will get a second chance to expand its police force at Uncle Sam’s expense.
Last summer, the Capital City got shut out of the "COPS" program funding offered through the federal stimulus package.
In Missouri, virtually all of that money went to the metropolitan areas.
"They have, as of Wednesday, opened that back up with some more money,” Jefferson City Police Chief Roger Schroeder told a meeting of the city council public safety committee. “They've given us a small window to re-apply and that window is two weeks."
Last year, Schroeder asked for funding for five new officers, including a school resource officer, two community policing officers, a detective, and a canine officer.
He said the Obama Administration has suggested it might now fund four new positions.
