COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- The University of Missouri plans to use a $6.8 million grant to help rural clinics and hospitals convert to electronic medical records.
The university will use the federal funds to create a Missouri Health Information Technology Assistance Center.
The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that Judy Baker, regional director of the U.S. Department of Health, announced the grant on Friday.
She says the department believes electronic records will reduce costs, eliminate paperwork and deliver better care.
University officials say the new center is expected to help 3,200 primary-care providers better understand electronic health records. About $5.8 million of the grant will be used to help 1,200 providers pay for electronic health record systems.
