COLUMBIA, MO -- Mizzou officials and a team of statewide partners announced the creation of a new health records center on Friday morning.
The United States Department of Health and Human Services awarded a $6.8 million, 2-year cooperative agreement for the Missouri Health Information Technology Assistance Center, also known as HIT.
The new center will help thousands of health care providers use electronic health records technology to improve care for low-income patients.
Doctors can use the technology to improve quality, safety and efficiency in patient care.
The project’s principal investigator and Chair of the Medical School’s Department of Health Management and Informatics Dr. Grant Savage said, “We’ll target primary care providers who serve underserved, underinsured and medically underinsured populations throughout the State of Missouri. We are especially going to focus on rural areas.”
The HIT Assistance Center will allow doctors to get a patient’s entire medical history and a wealth of other information at the click of a button.
Electronic health records also have the potential to save countless lives and billions of dollars.
