JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Gov. Jay Nixon plans to cut about $350 million from the budget passed by Missouri lawmakers.
Nixon's budget director, Linda Luebbering, said Tuesday that specific cuts will be announced when the governor signs the budget bills in June.
Luebbering says the cuts are necessary for three main reasons.
Legislators failed to pass several money-saving bills that had been assumed in the budget. She says lawmakers also assumed other savings that will not happen, such as unrealistically low estimates for the growth of Medicaid caseloads. Monthly revenue collections also have continued to fall below projections.
Although Republican House leaders said the budget was balanced, many lawmakers had acknowledged that the governor likely would have to make more cuts.
