JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Jefferson City animal shelter euthanized 27 cats that were taken from the same home this week.

Shelter veterinarian Amanda Dykstra says the cats all had contagious diseases and were a risk to other animals and shelter employees. They were euthanized Tuesday.

The Jefferson City News-Tribune reports that the animals were seized Monday and Tuesday from a Jefferson City home. Dykstra says they had FIV, which is similar to HIV in humans. They also had other diseases, such as kidney disease.
