COLUMBIA, MO. -- This past weekend’s rough weather took its toll on some Columbia recreation trails.
Heavy rains washed out sections of Columbia’s MKT Trail, Bear Creek Trail and Hinkson Creek Trail.
Crews are installing new underground pipes in the washed out areas to help prevent any future damage.
The cost of the repairs is about $25,000.
That’s the exact amount in the Columbia Parks and Recreation Department’s entire annual budget for trail maintenance.
City officials want trail users to use extra caution while the repairs are underway.
“Be cautious because of the equipment on the trail," Park Services Manager Mike Griggs said. "A lot of times, our equipment operators cannot hear you or know that you are coming up behind them. We require you to be as cautious as possible. We don’t want to close the trails. We want to keep them open. We want people to be cautious while they use them.”
Griggs said all three Columbia trails should be passable by the end of the week. Three years ago, a similar storm caused similar damage on those same Columbia trails.
