COLUMBIA, MO. -- State Treasurer Clint Zweifel visited the home of Columbia residents David and Maria Thomas on a sunny Tuesday afternoon. There, Zweifel announced an $11,000 loan made to the Thomas family.

It was the first ever Missouri linked deposit program loan for use in installing solar panels.

The announcement, two days before Earth Day, is part of $86 million in loans issued in Mid-Missouri and $257 million statewide.

The Thomas Family is using the solar panels as part of their effort to be more energy efficient.

“This is a great example of where our program served as a tool in the toolbox for a family that was trying to make a smart investment that not only is ultimately the right thing to do for the environment, but ultimately is going to pay off for them, too," Zweifel said.

Since January 2009, the $257 million in loans made by Zweifel have impacted 2,600 jobs and 1,100 farmers, saving those borrowers more than $4 million annually.
