CALLAWAY COUNTY, MO. -- Ameren UE has reported an “unusual event” at the Callaway Nuclear Power Plant.
Ameren UE Spokesperson Mike Cleary said the situation involved a radioactive water leak. No one was exposed to the leaked water because it was captured and contained in another system. The water leaked through a pipe and into a storage tank that was designed to capture this water.
The "unusual event" classification is the lowest level of incident on Nuclear Regulatory Commission's four stages of threats.
According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, an "usual event" is described as "events are in process or have occurred, which indicate a potential degradation of the level of the safety of the plant. No releases of radioactive material requiring offsite response or monitoring are expected unless further degradation of safety systems occurs."
The Callaway Nuclear Plant, located 10 miles southeast of Fulton, Mo., stayed on the lowest threat level from noon to 12:20 pm. Cleary said that there were no evacuations and that no one was ever in danger. He said the "unusual event" classification is intended to notify local, state and federal emergency officials so they’re aware of what is going on and can be prepared for any further developments.
