ROGERSVILLE, Mo. (AP) -- Two private wells near the southwest Missouri town of Rogersville have unsafe levels of a chemical that can cause health problems.
The Department of Natural Resources said in a news release that the levels of Tricholoroethylene (try-klor-oh-ETH'-uh-leen) found in the wells exceeded federal drinking water standards.
Tricholoroethylene -- TCE for short -- is a cleaning solvent that removes grease from metal parts. It can also be an ingredient in adhesives, paint removers, typewriter correction fluid and spot removers.
Exposure to low levels of TCE may damage the liver, kidneys and central nervous system.
The Springfield News-Leader reported that the Department of Natural Resources has not determined the source of the contamination.
