CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) -- Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Missouri says it is laying off 125 workers in Cape Girardeau.

The company notified the workers Thursday that their jobs were being eliminated.

Anthem public relations director Deborah Wiethop says 92 of the employees handled calls from health care providers and 33 processed medical claims.

The Southeast Missourian reports that 11 Anthem employees in Springfield were also given notice Thursday, as were 139 Anthem workers in Worthington, Ohio.

Wiethop says Anthem has lost about 3.9 percent of its customers in the last year because of rising unemployment.

Some of the claims processing jobs will be relocated to Anthem's Indianapolis operations center. Calls from health care providers will be outsourced.
