The Missouri Department of Natural Resources says a spill of cheese curds and dairy fat from a Carthage cheese-making business has killed an undetermined number of fish.

The Springfield News-Leader reported that an investigation showed that curds and dairy fat clogged a line to a pump station. The discharge from the the Schreiber Foods plant flowed into a nearby creek.

A Carthage resident notified the Department of Natural Resources of the spill.

After the problem was discovered, wastewater was pumped out of the creek and back into the sewer system.

The Department of Natural Resources says the total amount of the spill and the number of fish killed have not yet been determined.
