(AP) -- Webster County leads recent scrap tire cleanup efforts in Missouri.
The state Department of Natural Resources created the Tire Dump Roundup Program in 2006. Under the program, property owners with at least 500 scrap tires can apply to have the tires cleaned up for free from their property. The sites can't have more than 10,000 tires.
The DNR said that from November 2006 to February 2010, crews cleaned up about 940,000 tires from 209 sites.
Webster County, in southwest Missouri, had the highest count at more than 23,000 tires. Buchanan County ranked second with more than 18,000, and Warren County cleaned up more than 17,000.
