JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Missouri House plans to plug federal stimulus money into the state budget despite concerns that doing so could contribute to the national debt.
Missouri expects to receive $300 million of additional federal Medicaid aid if Congress extends a provision from the stimulus package. Gov. Jay Nixon initially included the money in his budget but now says the money should be saved.
The House budget plan calls for using that money to make payments to physicians, nursing homes and prisoners' health care. But some Republican lawmakers say Missouri should not plan on getting the additional money.
The House voted 104-43 Wednesday to keep $100 million that would be used for prisoner health care. Lawmakers are continuing work on a state budget that tops $23 billion.
