SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- Springfield police say the shooting death of a 17-year-old student may have been related to an earlier confrontation involving the boy.
Police say Kody Ray, a student at Hillcrest High School, died Monday after being shot at his home Sunday during a birthday party for a 5-year-old.
The Springfield News-Leader reports that police believe Ray was targeted by his killer.
Lt. David Millsap says officers are investigating reports that the shooting might have been related to an altercation Ray was involved in at Hillcrest.
In a March 16 posting on his Myspace.com page, Ray said he wasn't able to attend Hillcrest any longer. Springfield Public School spokesman Teresa Bledsoe said she couldn't discuss any disciplinary action involving Ray or other students.
