JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The head of the NCAA men's basketball championship is backing legislation that would let Missouri offer tax incentives for sports tournaments.

Greg Shaheen flew to the Missouri Capitol to testify Tuesday for legislation that would let Missouri give up to $10 million of tax credits annually to local organizers of sport events.

Also testifying for the bill was Doug Elgin, commissioner of the Missouri Valley Conference.

They said it may be difficult for Missouri cities to attract big sport events in the future because other states have begun offering incentives.

But Missouri's budget troubles may spike the bill. Republican Sen. Chuck Purgason, of Caulfield, is chairman of the Senate committee considering the bill. He said it is "dead in the water."
