ST. LOUIS, MO. -- The Public Service Commission opened two weeks of evidentiary hearings Monday on a request from Ameren/UE to increase annual revenues by $320 million through higher rates for electricity.

It's the third request for a rate increase since 2007 from the state's biggest utility.

Company President Warner Baxter told commissioners the St. Louis-based utility needs the additional money to pay for projects to improve reliability and to cover higher raw fuel costs.

Ameren initially sought a $400 million increase.
