Barges back on Missouri River

JEFFERSON CITY (AP) -- Barges have started moving goods again this year up the Missouri River.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says the year's first barges started moving up river Thursday with 6,000 tons of fertilizer. The fertilizer is carried by four barges and is expected to arrive on Sunday in Brunswick, which is about halfway between Jefferson City and Kansas City.

Transportation officials are optimistic that this year's navigation season on the river will be better than in the past. Barge traffic on the Missouri River has declined amid drought and low water levels over the last eight years.

The state agency and shippers have created a partnership to promote river barges. The group plans to study ways to improve shipping along the river.
