COLE COUNTY -- A Jefferson City man is dead after an accident involving a tractor trailer at Highway 54 and Heritage Highway.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says around 10:15 p.m. Saturday night a passenger car coming from Heritage Highway failed to yield to a tractor trailer headed westbound on 54.

Officers say the car's driver Richard Veltrop, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger Julie Trenary, 33, also from Jefferson City, is in serious condition at the University Hospital in Columbia.

The semi driver suffered moderate injuries.

Officers say their preliminary investigation indicates the semi was not speeding and those in the passenger car were not wearing their seatbelts.
