JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A lawsuit contends Missouri's system for awarding motor vehicle license offices has been changed to give an unfair advantage to nonprofit groups.
State officials awarded the Deer Creek license office in Maplewood to the Springfield not-for-profit Alternative Opportunities. The Maplewood office is among the busiest in the state.
Previous office operator Mike Becker sued to block Alternative Opportunities from taking over the office. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Springfield News-Leader each reported Tuesday that a state judge has issued a temporary order allowing Becker to keep operating the office.
A new state law gives a bidding preference to nonprofits seeking the license offices. Becker says the evaluation system was changed in the middle of his bid.
