JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri senators have given initial approval to a scaled-back bill tightening political ethics rules after bogging down on a broader version.

The measure that was advanced Wednesday gives the state Ethics Commission more enforcement power and requires more reporting of campaign donations.

Lawmakers receiving campaign donations of more than $250 during the legislative session would have to report them within 48 hours. The 48-hour rule currently applies only to donations of more than $5,000.

A similar requirement would apply to statewide elected officials and to candidates for state office.

The Senate dropped a proposal to prohibit lawmakers from working as political consultants for colleagues.
