JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missourians could soon help recruit foster and adoptive families through a checkoff on state income tax forms.
The Senate gave initial approval Tuesday to a bill allowing donations to public awareness efforts on the need for adoptive and foster families.
Missourians can already use their tax forms to donate to several funds such as those for veterans, children and home-delivered meals for the elderly.
Democratic Sen. Yvonne Wilson of Kansas City said the fund created by her bill would help bring attention to children needing homes.
The Social Services Department says there are nearly 9,500 Missouri children in foster care.
The bill also requires the state try to keep siblings together when possible.
