(AP) -- JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Renowned 19th-century painter and politician George Caleb Bingham is the newest figure in the Hall of Famous Missourians at the Statehouse.
Bingham's induction took place Monday, with a bronze bust of the painter joining those of previous inductees including Bob Barker, Walt Disney and Harry S. Truman.
Bingham came to Missouri with his family as a boy in 1819 and spent much of his youth near the mid-Missouri town of Arrow Rock.
His paintings featured frontier life along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. He also painted portraits, and scenes of political campaigning in Missouri.
Bingham was elected as a Whig to the Missouri House in 1848 and served as state treasurer during the Civil War. He was appointed adjutant general in 1875.
Bingham died in Kansas City in 1879.
